Get a Library Card

 
A Davenport Public Library card is FREE and can be used at at any Davenport Public Library location and the OWL, as well as online to access accounts, download eBooks and online resources. A Davenport Public Library card can also be used at any RiverShare Libraries member library, participating Open Access public library in Iowa, and the following Illinois libraries in the Quad Cities: Rock Island, Moline, East Moline, Silvis, Sherrard, Port Byron, and Coal Valley.
 
 

Who Can Get a Library Card

  • Residents of Davenport.
  • Davenport property owners residing outside city limits who do not have a home library.
  • Children under the age of 14 (must have a parent or legal guardian co-sign their card application). Note that parents/legal guardians are responsible for all items borrowed on a minor's card.
 

How to Get a Library Card

  1. Register now or apply in person at any Davenport Public Library location. Application information is confidential and is protected by Section 22.7(13) of the Code of Iowa and The Library's Confidentiality and Privacy Policy.
  2. Valid ID: Adults may obtain a card by providing a valid ID that verifies their name and current Davenport street address. Children's applications must be co-signed by a parent/legal guardian showing valid ID if the child is under the age of 14. Many types of identification that include current address are acceptable, including the following:
  • Iowa Driver's License
  • Iowa State ID
  • Voter Registration Card
  • Imprinted checks
  • Pre-printed lease agreement
  • First Class mail in an envelope postmarked within the last 30 days, along with an ID that verifies name
  • Vehicle Registration Card
  • Payroll stub within the last 30 days that includes full name and address
  • Emailed utility bill on mobile phone from within the last 30 days that includes full name and address
 

Other Library Cards

Digital Access Card: Don’t have time to visit The Library, but still want to use online resources? The Digital Access Card is for you! With the Digital Access Card, cardholders can use all of the Library's online resources, including Libby, Freegal, and more without leaving home! Be sure to choose “Digital Access Card” when you register online.
 
Business/Educator Card: If the business or school you work for is in Davenport, you may be eligible for a library card through your company. Fill out a form or contact The Library at (563) 326-7832 or customerservice@davenportlibrary.com to find out how!
 
Nonresident Card: You may use your hometown library card to borrow items at The Library:
  • Residents of the following Illinois towns: Moline, Rock Island, Silvis, Port Byron, East Moline, Sherrard, and Coal Valley. Bring your hometown library card and ID with your name and current street address.
  • Iowans whose library participates in Iowa Open Access.
  • If you live anywhere in the world and are visiting Davenport, bring your hometown library card and ID with your name and current street address.
Computer Use Card: You may use your library card to access The Library's public computers. If you are interested in using the computers but not borrowing any library materials, simply bring in your ID to get a computer use card.
 
 

Changes to Your Library Card

Lost or Stolen Cards: If your card is lost or stolen, contact The Library immediately so that unauthorized use of your card can be prevented. You are responsible for all materials checked out on your library card and for any charges accrued.
 
Change in Contact Information (address, phone number, etc.): Contact The Library when there is a change in your name, address, or phone number.
 
Moving away from Davenport: To cancel your card, contact Customer Service at (563) 326-7832 or email customerservice@davenportlibrary.com.

Borrow by Mail

Homebound? The Library offers a Borrow by Mail option for Davenport residents! Funded by the FRIENDS of the Davenport Public Library, Borrow by Mail is intended for individuals unable to come to a Davenport Public Library location. All items are mailed free of charge but must be returned to a Davenport Public Library location or to an item return at a Hy-Vee store on Kimberly Road. To place an item on hold, visit The Library catalog and select Borrow By Mail as the pick-up location.

 

Curbside Pickup Service

Curbside pickup is available at the Main Library and the Eastern Branch (Fairmount Branch has a drive-up service window). When you receive notification that your items are ready, park in the spot labeled “Curbside" near the front of the building. Call or text the phone number posted on the sign and we will be out with your items! Be sure to have your library card ready!

Drive-Up Window

Items on hold with a pick-up point at the Fairmount Branch can be picked up at the drive-up window, open during regular hours.

How to Return Items

Return borrowed materials to any of the following convenient locations:
  • Main Library
    • Interior book return (open hours)
    • Drive-up book return on 4th Street (24 hours)
  • Fairmount Branch
    • In-wall return slot in the lobby (open hours)
    • Drive-up book return in the front of the building (24 hours)
  • Eastern Branch
    • In-wall return slot in the lobby (open hours)
    • Drive-up book return in the front of the building (24 hours)
  • Exterior Book Drop at Hy-Vee store | 2200 West Kimberly Rd., Davenport, IA

How to Renew Items

Most materials may be renewed for an additional loan period if no one else has reserved them. The limit is one renewal per item. You may renew library materials in the following ways:

Autorenew

All eligible items checked out are renewed automatically one time. If you have chosen to be notified by The Library via email or text, you will receive an autorenewal notice. Items with holds, ineligible items and items that have already been renewed once do not automatically renew. Ineligible items include:

  • Wireless Hotspots
  • Community Experience Passes
  • TechKnow Items
  • Digital content (eBooks, digital magazines, etc.)
 

Online

  1. Go to The Library catalog.
  2. Click "Log In" at the top.
  3. Enter your library card number and passcode. (Hint: Your password is the last four digits of your telephone number.)
  4. Click on the "Log In" button.
  5. Click on the "Items Out" button.
 

By Phone

You must have your library card, password, and the barcodes of each item to be renewed. (Hint: Your password is the last four digits of your telephone number.)

When you call:
  • Press 2 to listen to items available for renew - this option allows the renewal of specific items or all items
  • Press 3 to renew specific items - this option only allows you to renew specific items.
